Fire safety

If you hear the fire alarm sound in the building you should

  • Exit immediately to a safe nearby location
  • Call 110 if you see smoke or fire
  • Warn others

Evacuation

Leave the building as quickly and safely as possible. Close doors and windows inside your apartment before evacuating the building. This will help to prevent the fire from spreading.

Find somewhere safe and nearby to stay and wait for further instructions.

Escape routes

Familiarize yourself with escape routes and emergency exits in your building. Hallways must be clear of obstacles at all times in case the building needs to be evacuated. It is therefore necessary that all personal belongings be kept inside of the apartment. Emergency exits that are normally locked will automatically open if the fire alarm goes off. The elevator will not work during a fire alarm.

Extinguishers

All apartments have fire hoses located under the kitchen sink. They are intended to be used by the tenant in the event of a fire inside of the apartment.

Causes for fire alarm sounding

When the alarm for the building sounds it is most often caused by cooking and the opening of the apartment door to the hallway. This will trigger the building alarm and notify the fire department.

If you have smoke in your apartment do not open your apartment door to air it out

How to air out apartment for smoke

  • Remove source of smoke from heat, place lid on top, extinguish if needed.
  • Turn on ventilation hood
  • Open bedroom doors, bathroom doors and windows and balcony door. DO NOT OPEN DOOR FROM APAPARTMENT TO HALLWAY
    • Opening doors and windows inside your apartment allow the ventilation system in the apartment to remove air and smoke faster. This is also beneficial to do while cooking if more ventilation is needed.

The smoke detectors in your apartment

Your smoke detectors inside your apartment are not connected to the building smoke alarm system. They are two separate systems that operate independently of each other.

The smoke detectors are located on the ceiling. The detectors in all bedrooms operate from a 9-volt battery that the tenant is responsible for changing. We recommend the tenant test the smoke detector on the ceiling once a month.

The common areas in some apartments have a different smoke detector system. There is a box on the wall next to the entry door with 4 lights, the first light is an indicator for the system being on. The next 3 lights are indicators for the alarm. There is a siren next to the box and a smoke detector on the ceiling. If this alarm sounds you can press one of the 3 lights to turn it off. There will be a red or yellow light. The alarm will sound again if smoke is still detected and you can press the button again to turn it off. You will need to do this until the smoke has cleared.

Do not remove or disable the smoke detector
If the smoke detector is removed or altered you can be held financially and legally responsible in the case of an actual fire regardless if the fire started somewhere else. Your neighbors rely on you to have a functioning smoke detector to warn them.

Use the ventilation hood every time you cook

This helps circulate the air with fresh air allowing for a smoke free environment. Use appliances like toasters under or near ventilation hood.

Keep oven and stovetop clean
Food left over from cooking previously can burn and can trigger the smoke detector. Clean the oven and stovetop periodically after cooking.

Standards and requirements

BSN meets and exceeds requirements and follows recommendations in accordance with the Oslo fire department.

BSN exceeds the requirement of building alarm system by having an alarm system that automatically notifies the fire department when the building alarm sounds. Having a building alarm system is required. Notification to the fire department is not required.

BSN meets the requirement for having smoke detectors in each room of every apartment.

BSN exceeds the required minimum alarm bells. Alarm bells were added throughout corridors and outside building.

Building alarm VS Apartment alarm

Building 3A-4A, 2B and 1C have their own fire alarm systems. They work independently of each other and are not connected to the apartment smoke detectors.

If you live in building 2B and there is an alarm in building 3A you will not hear it clearly and it is not meant for you to evacuate.
